“Lessons From Helene and Milton: Insurance and Preparedness—Part 1,” Independent Agent Magazine

Nov 6, 2024

Big I’s Independent Agent Magazine has released the first installment of a two-part series by Clayton Matthews, providing guidance on hurricane preparedness in the face of storms like Helene and Milton. Published on November 4, 2024, this initial article explores the two main types of personal lines insurance related to hurricanes and severe storms.

“Typically, there are two forms of personal lines insurance related to hurricanes or severe storms: a standard homeowners property & casualty policy that includes storm and windstorm coverage and a separate policy for flood or stormwater coverage,” Matthews explains. “Notably, most standard homeowners policies do include wind coverage.”

He further provides advice on forming disaster plans.

“When a storm is approaching, people will run to the grocery store for bread and milk,” Clayton says. “But this is also the time to make sure you have other resources in place. Who is their plumber? Electrician? Tree guy? They should have this information at hand.”
